The saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” is never more relevant than when it comes to people in general and war veterans in particular as far as I’m concerned.
And who better to write a country song to convey this sentiment that two war veterans themselves, a married couple none the less, alongside a Nashville singer/songwriter who is passionate about helping promote their cause via the Songwriting With Soldiers programme?
That artist is Erin Enderlin, and the resulting song “When You Look At Me” (which also features the fabulous Randy Houser) is out now and available to stream in all the usual places.
This incredibly thought provoking write saw Erin collaborating with Tanja Struyck-Fogleman and Brent Fogleman during a couples retreat, and as Erin rightly says is “a piece of their story, but I believe it speaks to us all”.
Here’s the moving story behind the song, told by Tanja, Brent and Erin themselves.
Erin adds “We’re all carrying things people can’t see. Life and healing is a journey – and if you’re not where you want to be yet, or if you’re not okay today, that’s ok. I hope this song brings you a little comfort, a little connection”.
