Nope, we’re not talking about the iconic Cavern Club in Liverpool. This gem is nestled halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga in the town of Pelham, TN. Known as The Caverns, this unique venue is set inside actual caves, offering a concert experience like no other. On Sunday night, July 14th, I finally got to cross this off my bucket list as I jumped in my car and made the hour-and-a-half drive south to catch the incredible Hayseed Dixie live in action!

Where metal meets bluegrass, Hayseed Dixie is a band that seamlessly blends genres to create something truly magical. With Tennessee natives and a sprinkling of homegrown UK talent, their blend of bluegrass, country, rock, and metal takes you on a musical journey that’s as unique as it is captivating. If you’re new to the name, I promise it won’t take long for you to get hooked.

The night kicked off with Iron Horse, setting the tone with some good new-fashioned bluegrass music. Playing rock covers with a traditional bluegrass twist, they were what I would imagine listening to the Del McCoury Band covering Ozzy Osbourne. With the crowd warmed up, beers in hand, everyone was clearly ready to enjoy the night.

But the main attraction was Hayseed Dixie. After over two decades in the business, it was clear to see why they’ve become such a beloved act. With some lineup changes over the years, the current ensemble has an undeniable rapport on stage. Joe Hyamashy on mandolin brings a much-loved comedic aspect to the performance while being one of the most kick-ass mandolin players you’ll see. John Wheeler, a founding member, leads the charge on vocals and guitar, delivering familiar hits like “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Ace Of Spades” with faultless bluegrass picking. Tim Carter, from Nashville, handled the banjo and even took the vocal lead on a couple of songs, while Jake “Bakesnake” Byers anchored the band on bass guitar. Each member is a fine musician in their own right, making the band’s dynamic irreplaceable.

Towards the end of the show, John reminded the audience of their merch stand, but in true Hayseed Dixie fashion, he did it with a song, breaking into “Our Merchandise Table Is Right There By The Doorway.”

Despite primarily putting their own unique twist on some of the most iconic of songs, they do have an handful of originals. My personal favorite is “I’m Keeping Your Poop,” a classic that will have you grinning from ear to ear.

They also performed an amazing medley of “Paranoid,” “Eye Of The Tiger,” and “Pumped Up Kicks,” transitioning seamlessly between the tracks and offering something for everyone. This band is all about inclusivity, letting loose, and having a fun time.

To close out the evening, they played what will soon be their newest single, a song that transcends, well, everything: the one and only “Y.M.C.A.” OK, so that may have been a little enthusiastic but you know you love it! The audience joined in immediately, and it was a refreshing take on a song that we all know inside and out, without losing its recognisability. It was a fitting end to a night filled with laughter, music, and the breathtaking beauty of a natural cave venue.

If you’ve never seen these guys play or are just learning about them now, I can’t recommend them highly enough. Whether you’re listening to their music at home or attending a show, you’re guaranteed to have a great time!
