Looking for a fun and catchy song that will get your cowboy boots tapping? Not to mention a ton of fantastic old school country instrumentation and stunning vocals? Look no further than the new single from Mae Estes, “The 90s Called” released last Friday via Blue Highway Records. 

Co-written by Aaron Raitiere and Benjy Davis, its message is one that hit home with Mae immediately she heard it …. she is a strong advocate for the traditional country sound she grew up listening to and  fell in love with at a time when the genre is fast evolving, some may say beyond recognition. 

The clever and quirky write begins as a conversation between a juke box and a neon sign reminiscing about the decade that is so close to Mae’s heart …. and 90s themes and references continue in abundance as the song continues. Mullets and moustaches? Tick! Landline phones? Tick! Smoking being cool? Tick! Tight Jeans? Tick! Not to mention a couple of the decades biggest hits,

“Achy Breaky Heart” and “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” getting a mention. 

I already alluded to the  arrangements, and in particular there is some stunning fiddle playing by the legendary Joe Spivey and dobro courtesy of Josh Matheny in the mix. 

And how fabulous is the accompanying lyric video? 

Having won over the hearts of many here in the UK on her two visits this year (for C2C and then BST Hyde Park, where she opened for Garth Brooks who of course had just a few hits of his own in the 90s!) I’m sure this song will be a popular addition to her set list on her next visit here. And with an album due out next year, there’s plenty more to look forward to for her growing fanbase.
