Like Loretta Lynn, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Dolly Parton, Carly has carved her place in  Country music writing about life as it’s lived, not conceived by a string of writers’ appointments. From the break-out sensation “Every Little Thing,” the tenacious vocalist who honed her chops at 16 years old as a full-time performer singing at Dollywood has mined the awkward, the aching and the hoping to craft a classic return to the genre.

With four 2020  CMA Award nominations, including the prestigious  Song of the Year  and a win for  Musical Event  both for chart-topping hit “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” Carly  has established strength in the face of the storm as her purview. Like Tammy Wynette, courage and pain are her currency – and both are on abundantly on display on  29. The seven-song collection emerged after losing producer and champion busbee and finding simpatico creative conspirators in Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne.

More traditional-leaning than many of her contemporaries,  these songs showcase the burn in her torchy alto and the power of lean writing that captures a moment. Whether the bracing for moving on “Day One,” the silken caress of “Messy,” the knowing slow sway of “Liability” or the plucky acoustic confessional of “Should’ve Known Better,” the Kentucky-born songwriter scoops all the things she knows about love and creates an owner’s manual for actual women navigating relationships in today’s world.

With the plucky “Next Girl,” an invocation of Patty Loveless’ freewheeling girl power, climbing the charts at Country radio, 29  offers the same kind of multi-faceted look at how life plays out. Writing like the classic women artists of the last 50 years, she delivers a spot-on primer on just how loving, losing and putting oneself back together feels.
